When are grants considered?
Applications are only considered at the Trustees quarterly meetings in January, April, July and October. The deadline is normally 6 weeks prior to the meeting: those received subsequently are automatically held over.

Who is eligible for a grant?
Charitable organisations based in the UK that are registered with the Charity Commission are eligible to apply for a grant. Any educational institution is also eligible to apply for a grant whether or not it is a registered charity.

Do you support local branches of national organisations?
Not normally, even if registered as a separate charity, but you may consult the Foundation’s Secretary for a specific answer.

Do you make grants to charities outside the UK?
No, only to charities that provide their help to UK residents.

Do you make larger grants?
Yes - but only to charities with whom the Foundation has established a history of smaller donations and then at the invitation of the Trustees.

Can grants be paid in tranches spread over a specified number of years?
Yes - but, as above, only to charities with whom the Foundation has established a history of smaller donations and then at the invitation of the Trustees.

What supporting documents are required?
None - the information on the Application Form is sufficient for the Trustees to reach a decision.

How frequently can we apply?
The Foundation does not give more than one grant to the same charity in a 12 month period. This timetable does not automatically apply if an application was unsuccessful but common sense should be used to avoid bombarding the Trustees with quarterly requests. Applicants are therefore asked not to submit quarterly requests for funding.

Do you consider just specific projects?
On the contrary, although applications in respect of a project are considered, the Trustees prefer to contribute their modest grants to the core operating costs of smaller charities.

Do you support capital expenditure?
As above, although applications in respect of a project are considered, the Trustees prefer to contribute their modest grants to the core operating costs of smaller charities.

Do you expect a report on the use made of a grant?
No, only in exceptional circumstances e.g where financial support has been to a specific project rather than core operating costs. Prompt acknowledgement upon receipt of the grant payment itself is considered mandatory, however.

Are there categories of charity which could be seen to fall within your objects but to which you do not normally make grants?
In addition to to the exceptions listed elsewhere in this FAQ, as is outlined in the Funding Policy, the Foundation rarely, if ever, makes grants to any of the following:
  • places of worship seeking funds for restoration or upgrade of facilities.
  • students requesting a grant for tertiary education or a gap year.
  • museums.
  • palliative care.
  • animal welfare organisations whose primary purpose is not conservation of the environment.
  • organisations with an annual income in excess of £1 million.
